I am not sure what this has to do with Utah Kayaking, but this is a very sad story. This shows how fragile life is, and how even when we think we are in control the river is a much more powerful force. This young man lost his life doing what he loved, but it is still tragic. Be safe out there this season, and never wait for someone else to step in, and help if a fellow boater is in need.

There were a lot of ties to Utah in this one and worth noting. Thanks for posting. Tragic is absolutely the correct word. This season, based on AW stats, is on pace to being the deadliest in recorded history. Rivers are huge, be careful out there, shit happens.

I think what scares me about the North Fork of the Payette is how it is a consistent killer of extremely competent paddlers.

Condolences to all those involved. You can never be too careful on that river.

I met Stephen at Fibark this year since he was on a road trip with two of my friends from back east (including Justin Cranell, the guy who ran shuttle for them that day). Very sad to hear, it's incredibly sobering when the river takes someone who is at the top of their game like Stephen was.

Two friends of mine found Stephen's body this weekend. Hope this brings some sort of closure to his family and friends. The body was found below Juicer, several miles below where the accident happened. Here is an article where Stephen's father describes his son's passion and love for kayaking. His father also describes how Stephen got separated from his boat. Condolenses to Stephen's family and friends.
