Black Canyon of the Bear 1500cfs this weekend!
Just checked Pacifcorp's website and it's supposed to peak at 1500cfs both Saturday and Sunday. Who wants to go?

1500 CFS is not for the weak, reportedly feels very NF of the Payette-ish. Black Canyon has not run at this level since the flow studies 10ish years ago. I have some concerns that the releases will not be well attended due to the level and the holiday weekend....please try to prove me wrong.
Getting fair turnouts the past couple weeks on Sundays (13 paddlers on April 10th and 15 on April 17th). Saturdays are pretty weak at 0 two weeks ago and 5 last Saturday...not consistent with the specific requests for Saturday releases to allow folks to attend church.

Hey Charlie, what was the top release? I seem to remember a 13 or 14oo. Last years top was 1100 I believe.

1260 in July of 2008 is the biggest I remember. I don't recall any bigger than this in the previous three years, but I could easily be forgetting one, this is all from memory.

Anybody have a feel for the number of paddlers on the river either day? PacifiCorp said 16 Sat and 8 or 9 on Sun with some carnage one of the days...everyone physically ok? Charlie

The Saturday number sounds about right. The group I was in started with 12 and had 11 from below Grace Falls to the end of the run (one hiked out).
I wasn't there for Sunday and can't speak to that number. There was some carnage in our party Saturday (3.5 swims), but no lasting injuries. Just some bumps and bruises. There is a Werner Player bent-shaft that was pinned underwater in the rapid just below Grace Falls. It has orange fiberglass blades. A friend was borrowing it from me for the run. If anyone finds it, please send me a message on this board and I'll get you my contact info.

Some carnage got dished out on saturday, 4 swims and 2 lost paddles out of our 12 people and one swim from the other group. Pretty much 1 out of every 3 people swam that day... 16 people sounds about right. Everyone is physically alright other then some bruises.
Thank PacifiCorp for giving all that extra water. Mucho Fun!

How was the 1390 cfs flow? Compared to the normal 900 level that we usually see?

It was super fun. The lines were pretty much the same, but the holes were bigger. The tongue going left of the top hole at Boo Boo was less defined and the hole itself was wider.

Saturday was my first time on the Bear, so I've never done it at lower flows, but i'll second the "super fun" rating!
great river, so glad these releases exist!

Thanks for the info on last weekends numbers and carnage. Glad everone's body is ok, and hopefully the egos are not too beat up as well.
Looks good right now for 700 this weekend...not for certain till Thursday. Good opportunity for those of us who don't have the fearless spirit anymore for 1400+ cfs.

Does anyone know if how early the flows start on Saturday? Will it be the usual 10am? Have they been running all day to compensate for the run off? Paul
