Goin to Jackson
Always nice, Jackson in the summer. This past week I took a bunch of boys to Jackson to camp for a week. We camped at Atherton Campground on slide lake on the edge of the Gros Ventere river wilderness. It was a great campsite with water, pit toilets and a host, $12 per night.
Our plan was to do the Hoback section of the snake, we came equated with 3 duckies and a 15'SB from the Uof U. The section was a fun scenic big river experience with stopper holes and sweet surfing spots. Big Kahuna and Lunch Counter pleased as they can almost flipping the duckies and raft. We did see another raft flip while we were eating lunch at lunch counter on the way back from our run.
We also put the boats in on the upper Gros Ventre river, from it's confluence with Crystal creek down to slide lake. Lots of class 1-2 wave trains, a great river for newbies in duckies.
Then there was the lower river, coming out of the lake and going down almost to Kelly. Wow, what a piece of water, It is fast, semi technical, twisty turney, relentless, no rest, little stretch of river. Full of boulders, chutes and pour overs.
So, if you're looking for a beautiful place to have a blast on the water, Jackson right now would work.
In addition to the water there is mountain hiking, a ropes course, mt biking lift service to a park and single tracks, nice decks with Wyoming style libations, what's not to like.
Be aware that on entering WY you must be inspected for invasive species and then buy a sticker for your boat, but at least WY and ID are doing something about the problem.
