The UWC is holding its 3rd annual trip on the Sevier River! This is a
great class 3 run amidst beautiful southern Utah scenery. The club has
reserved sites #26 & #27 for Friday the 6th and Saturday the 7th at the Castle
Rock Campground.

The location and directions to Castle Rock Campground can be found here:

https://maps.google.com/maps/place?ftid=0x874b2460c20b171f%3A0x11a7314221644b58&q=38.554341%2C-112.355082&ved=0CA4Q-gswAA&sa=X&ei=1PfMT-n7FYXAwAG7oviDAw

If you are not joining us for the camping Friday night, we will be meeting for the first run on Saturday morning at 11:00 AM at the rest area at Deer Creek Rd. and Highway 89 across from Hoovers Grill:

https://maps.google.com/maps?ie=UTF8&cid=4324824058318048990&q=Hoover%27s+Grille&iwloc=A&gl=US&hl=en

This is a really fun run through some spectacular scenery. Castle Rock Campground is also very nice. Hope to see a good turnout. As always, non members are welcome and will just need to sign a waiver and pay the $5.00 ACA insurance fee.

I'd love to do this as it's the only water within hrs of me. Can a guy with no roll do it without becoming a rescue training dummy? I've got an XP10 and all the gear, just never done WW in it yet.

Perfect time of year to learn how to roll in a lake (I'd suggest noseplugs/clips, earplugs, maybe swim goggles). Start with a wet exit. Try swimming ~10 yards, holding on to your boat and paddle (that should be interesting with an XP10 :-) And practice that brace! Better brace = less swimming = more fun

its class 3. you will most definitely swim. not to be hard on you but you'll want to have a good brace and roll. that takes time. just sayin.

I would offer my boat-chasing services, which only cost a couple bottles of IPA alien , but I am not sure I will make it down there. I have not done the run; see what the trip leaders say. Ask Ron where a class II stretch is on the Sevier.

The Green River Daily is a pretty user friendly "first whitewater run", although its big enough you would definitely need someone experienced to chase your boat if necessary.

You gotta drive to find whitewater in this state :-)

Just for a frame of reference, I would say it is a fairly significant step up from say Hen-Tag which is also a class III. There are a couple of drops where a swim would be long and rough. Marysvale Canyon is definitely an intermediate run.

Don't let my post above stop you if you would like to go. There will be people to fish you and your gear out of the river if you swim. Just pointing out it is not a total beginner run.

Thanks Bill, I think? not sure what to garner from your link is my boat wrong for class 3? It seems to get great reviews for big water like the Grand.

XP10 is fine for class III. It is just optimized for two purposes: to be a cross over touring/whitewater boat and for hauling gear for self-support multi-day trips.

That's why I bought it ;-) Just thought there was something I didn't know about it. I may bring my LL coupe with thigh straps to try out before i run it with the XP10. I did kayak support for the StGeorge Iron man in may and was able to stay out on the water and rescue athletes and support people in 45 mph wind and 5' swells with out thigh straps, I should be able to handle some class 3 with it. Even if i do swim it will be easier to self rescue on a SOT, right?

You would be fine on the coupe and yes it would be easier to self-rescue in it. I will personally be running in an AIRE duck because my roll is not reliable enough to feel comfortable on the Sevier in my hardshell. Smile

UWC Sevier River Trip July 6-8th Empty Not too shabby!

Post by telekopter2 Thu 28 Jun 2012, 2:27 am

882 cfs? 6.68 ft?

Really? sounds like great flow seeing as how the max in '83 was 4380 and the median is in the 600's.

any of the our esteemed river sages have an answer for why the sevier has this much water while everything else is low?

USGS says it's in the 75th to 90th percentile for pete's sake. how is it so good?

I'm not sure where you are seeing that number. I didn't think there was a USGS guage for this stretch. I always use the Paiute reservoir outflow which is at 583 right now:

http://www.sevierriver.org/reservoirs/piute-reservoir

583 is pretty typical irrigation flow. Fun level though. Which guage are you looking at?

Yes those are the correct links. For some reason embedding the links on this forum only works when logged in. (and possibly only for the original post author) I have modified the original post to simply have the URL.

He just copied that text from the post I made on the facebook even page.
