The Bear River... Empty The Bear River...

Post by brianteats Thu 04 Nov 2010, 6:30 pm

Is flowing at 650+ cfs at the Utah/Idaho state line. If the flows hold, I'll probably head up to do the Oneida Narrows this Saturday if any body else wants to hit it up. Yes, it's a lame Class III- run, but at least you're on the river.

Cons-
It's a 2 hour drive from Ogden.
It's 40% flat, 50% ripples, 9% Wheeee!, and 1% Oh boy!!

Pros-
It's flowing 650cfs, way more than anything else nearby
Great scenery
At least you're on the river

At 650cfs it shouldn't be too scrapey, but low enough to weave around the boulders and keep things interesting. I was planning on leaving Ogden around 10am, being at the take-out by noon. So if you're interested or know of anyone wanting to enjoy a mellow intermediate-beginner run, don't be shy.

Yo B, if it holds I am down and can bring(meet up with) a crew. Never run it and sounds fun. I am skipping town tomorrow but can meet up next weekend.

If Murtaugh holds, next weekend(Bubba, me and whomever else). If not, Riley/malad combo same area). will send you info via other means. You'd dig the murtaugh. I've gotta boat and will gladly drag you down any and all of it(you've got the skills)

Looks like the gauge did some funky things last night, but in the end, settling in the 400s- minimum is 500+ for me. No Bear River. End transmission. (cue white noise)

Looks like Murtaugh's holding at 1,000. Has anyone run it at that level?

Chris,

I asked my roommates Dad about Murtaugh at 1k cfs. He has been around kayaking longer then most of us have been alive, used to teach kayaking in the 90s. This is what he said it.

"very interesting at low water due to the rock slab riverbed. fantastic channels & grooves carved everywhere. (especially the seldom done upper gorge). it's pretty obvious where the water goes in such a wide river at such a low level except at let's-make-a-deal. door 4.5 I think at this level. (450-500 cfs is about as low as I've ever done it). just beware of the undercuts along the sidewalls at most of the steeper drops. you'll have some fun at most every drop since everything is so defined and workable at low water, compared to the raging maelstrom at high levels. Hope you get some sun. It's damn frosty down in there this time of year.
best,
jim "

Thanks for the beta, Justin. I've got to take care of some stuff at home, so I won't be able to go. Plus, I just found out that I'm going to be kayaking the Grand Canyon for the first two weeks of January, so a weekend trip right now is kind of hard to justify with my wife.

Dang, Barrel Springs sounds fun right now (on the buzz). Running twice what the gauge says for some reason (dam work).
